To give you an idea of who we are here’s a bit of what we’ve been up to the past few years and why we started on a path toward urban homesteading.

It’s all about that (D.I.Y.) Attitude

In 2021, I taught myself a lot about home improvement & repair and gave our house a serious facelift. It’s a 1950s home and we’re only the second owners so understandably a lot of the interior decoration was a bit… dated.

I moved cabinets, repaired drywall, and did a whole heck of a lot of painting, all with our two-year-old in tow.

You Just start where you are

In 2022 I was in my third trimester with our second kiddo and after looking at the grocery bill one day realized that inflation was kicking our ass.

The fact of the matter was that as the inflation rate kept rising we were constantly being priced out of being able to afford groceries for a family of three, and with a fourth person on the way, something needed to change.

So we started looking at how people have handled previous economic depressions.

And the answer was urban homesteading.

So we started

Our plan had always been to live somewhere with a bit of land and do some small-scale farming, eventually. We just planned to do it a bit further down the road.

And since I’m a writer at heart I wanted to document everything as we went.

Info about what urban homesteading is, what we’re trying, what is (and more often isn’t) working for us. As well as about parenting and sewing and occasionally other things that I get hyper-focused on.

In 2022 I wrote a lot and gardened more. Most of the current content of the blog is from the first year.

In 2023 I gardened more and wrote a lot less. Writing, as it turns out, is one of those things that is easier with a newborn who naps than a 1-year-old who can climb.

And here we are

We didn’t know anything about urban homesteading when we started in 2022 and two years later in 2024 we still don’t know what we’re doing, but we’re still trying.

And now that the kids are a bit bigger, I’m back to writing about it.

So, welcome to the journey!
